BulAIS 2024 Workshop

on Information Systems & Digital Innovation
25–26 October 2024 · Sofia, Bulgaria

About BulAIS

A scholarly society and an annual workshop — both rooted in the Bulgarian academic tradition and connected to the wider Balkan and Eastern-European information-systems community.

The Association

The Bulgarian Association for Information Systems (Българска асоциация за информационни системи · BulAIS) is the recognised Bulgaria Chapter of the international Association for Information Systems (AIS). Its membership is drawn from the country's principal research-active faculties — the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”, the University of National and World Economy, the Technical University of Sofia, the New Bulgarian University, and from sister departments in Plovdiv, Varna and Ruse.

BulAIS exists to promote, professionalise and internationalise information-systems scholarship and education in Bulgaria. Through its annual workshop, its doctoral consortium, and its participation in pan-European programmes (ECIS, ICIS, MCIS), the association connects local researchers to international peer-review communities while maintaining a distinct Bulgarian and Balkan voice on the IS field.

The 2024 Workshop

BulAIS 2024 is the eleventh edition of the annual workshop and the first held entirely on the new Lozenets campus of FMI Sofia University. The workshop deliberately retains a single-track, intensive format: peer-reviewed full papers presented in plenary, with extended Q&A and structured discussion. We accept a small number of papers — typically between five and ten — to safeguard the quality of conversation.

This year's edition is organised around the theme “Digital Innovation: Foundations, Frictions and Frontiers”. We invited research at the intersection of accounting and information systems, cybersecurity in the financial and public sectors, e-government in the Western Balkans, and the practical absorption of cloud and AI technologies into regional enterprise practice.

Scope & Editorial Standards

BulAIS papers are subject to double-blind peer review by a programme committee drawn from BulAIS, regional AIS chapters (AIS Greece, AIS Romania, AIS Serbia/Yugoslavia) and from senior reviewers at AIS-affiliated journals. Accepted full papers are published in the CEUR Workshop Proceedings series under ISSN 1613-0073, with each volume receiving a DOI and being indexed by DBLP, Google Scholar, and Scopus (CEUR Vol. 3xxx indexing policy applies).

The workshop's editorial policy is conservative: papers must demonstrate a clear contribution to information-systems knowledge, transparent method, and engagement with the existing AIS / IS literature. We do not publish position papers or vendor reports.

A Note on Language & Place

Working language of the workshop is English. Papers are published exclusively in English to maximise the visibility of regional scholarship. Bulgarian and other Balkan languages are warmly welcomed in informal discussion, social events, and at the workshop dinner.

Sofia itself — at the foot of Vitosha, with its layers of Thracian, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman and modern European heritage — provides a fitting backdrop. The workshop traditionally includes a Saturday-afternoon guided walk through the historic centre, taking in the rotunda of Sveti Georgi (the oldest building in Sofia), the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the National Library “St. Cyril and St. Methodius”.

За науката, в служба на обществото. — For science, in service of society. This Sofia-University motto guides BulAIS in its commitment to rigorous, locally-grounded and internationally-legible IS scholarship.
